Holy Basil & Matcha Latte

Switching things up here with a colourful and savoury afternoon sip. Holy Basil—also know as Tulsi or “Queen of the Herbs”—is the shining crown in this salted tea latte.

Coffee is, and likely always will be, my morning fuel. Matcha is my go-to in the afternoon when I want a sustained energy boost to power up the rest of my day. Holy basil brings a pungent and earthy bitterness to the mix, while matcha adds nuttiness and a grassy note. Creamy milk gives a touch of sweetness and a pinch of flakey salt brings everything together. Finally, MCT adds richness, mouthfeel and a shot of medium-chain triglycerides (easily digestible, healthy fats that your body converts into useable energy quickly). If you want to add a colourful, savoury pick-me-up to your afternoon, check out my recipe below!

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup cold, filtered water

  • 1 cup full-fat milk, or raw buffalo milk (if you want to substitute with a dairy alternative I’d suggest a light, unsweetened coconut milk from a can, and omit the MCT)

  • loose palmful of fresh holy basil

  • 1 tsp MCT oil (optional)

  • pinch of Maldon salt (or flaky salt of choice)

Instructions

  1. Place a small pot on the stove on low heat. Add the water, milk and matcha powder. Gently whisk in the matcha to break up any clumps. Add the holy basil, MCT oil and pinch of salt.

  2. Cover the pot and let steep and simmer for 15-20 minutes.

  3. Pour and serve, with the holy basil or strained.
